Title: Van Speandonck Hommage
Created in: 2022
Dimensions: 60x60 cm
Edition: 7

Work by the famous flower painter Gerard Van Spaendonck formed the basis for this work in delicate pink and white pastel shades. Van Spaendonck, who was born in Tilburg, made a career in France. Louis XVI appointed him court painter in 1774. Remarkably, he was ennobled by Napoleon Bonaparte after a rich career as a professor of flower painting, advisor to the Académie and co-founder of the Institut de France.
The flower still life is part of the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art. The material consists of found artificial flowers and props from the thrift store.

Title: Bonbonnière Botero
Made in: 2025
Size: 27x 27 cm
Edition: 7
Print on 4 mm dibond with a matt lacquer finish.
Inspiration for a new flower still life titled Bonbonnière Botero came from the work of Colombian artist Fernando Botero. His style, known as 'Boterismo', is characterized by the exaggeration of shapes, often depicted in round contours. The objects in Botero's work have a playful, almost cartoonish touch. This style can also be found in his flower still lifes, which are characterized by eye-catching convex shapes that are placed on top of each other.

Title: Échos du Rococo
Made in: 2024
Size: 30x30 cm
Edition: 7
Print on 4 mm dibond with a matt lacquer finish.
The miniature garden vase, which forms the starting point for this still life, put me on the trail of magnificent and lush gardens in rococo style. This compact but meticulously crafted work plays with the elegance and lush ornamentation of that period. Clear light blue, fresh lemon yellow and green tones radiate a frivolous energy, while the graceful lines and abundant flowers reflect the lighthearted charm of this style period.

Title: Sèvres
Created in: 2023
Dimensions: 90x110 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
While making 'Sèvres', an extra large sumptuous still life, I was inspired by the famous French Sèvres porcelain in terms of atmosphere and color scheme. In terms of composition and elaboration by the watercolors of Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840). This Belgian painter and botanist first worked as court painter to Marie Antoinette of Austria and - a remarkable thing - after the French Revolution in the service of Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais. Redouté was a student of Gerard van Spaendonck.

Title: Blumen in Gläsern
Created in: 2024
Dimensions: 60x70 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
A flower still life by Paul Klee formed the basis of this work. He painted it in 1925, during the heyday of his transformative and influential Bauhaus period. 'Blumen in Glasern' is a typical example of Klee's unique style, in which abstract and figurative elements go together with a balanced use of color. His art was influenced by expressionism, surrealism and cubism, but Klee developed his own distinctive style.

Title: Memphis Whispers
Created in: 2024
Dimensions: 30x30 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
The Memphis Group - described with a wink as "a shotgun marriage between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price" - was founded in the 1980s by the Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. This movement introduced a style inspired by various art movements, including Constructivism from the Interwar period and Pop Art from the 1960s. The Memphis Group style is characterized by striking colors and geometric shapes. In this small floral still life (30 x 30 cm), entitled 'Memphis Whispers', I play with the use of color and design language that refer to the Memphis style.

Title: Yellow Yellow
Created in: 2024
Dimensions: 27x27 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
A warm summer breeze played through my thoughts during the creation of this small-format flower still life entitled 'Yellow Yellow'. Slightly impressionistic influences are reflected in this work: in terms of asymmetrical composition, inspired by a still life by Floris Verster, and in atmosphere, with warm, bright tones that refer to Paul Gauguin.

Title: Boudoir
Created in: 2023
Dimensions: 30x30 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
This smaller-sized flower still life came about associatively with the mysterious intimate atmosphere of a boudoir and the Art Deco period as sources of inspiration. The starting point was the small frosted glass vase in a beautiful deep red color that, for me, fitted in with the geometry of shapes in the Art Deco style.

The jade-colored mini vase, which I was delighted to discover at a local thrift store, was the starting point for this small-format still life in the atmosphere of a Chinoiserie. The discovery of roses in an unusual jade-green hue was the first step towards this work. Associating loosely with the later work of George Braque, I came to this still life, in which I try to do justice to the transition to Cubist forms in his work.

Title: Fiori di Morandi II
Created in: 2020
Dimensions: 60x52 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
'Fiori di Morandi I' is the first work in which I was inspired by the work of Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964). This Italian painter had his own recognizable style. He worked in a small studio where he arranged the objects slightly differently each time. His work breathes an atmosphere of silence and tranquility, in which every detail matters. Flowers sometimes figure in his sober, subtle still lifes. I took these works with flowers as a starting point. I enjoyed working on this tranquil, contemplative still life. In 2022 I made 2 more flower still lifes with Morandi as a source of inspiration.

Maannacht, a painting by Jan Sluijters from 1912, and a flower still life in expressionist style of a later date (1930) formed the basis of my ode to Sluijters. Composition and colors inspired me to make this arrangement in a bright blue vase against a deep sea green background.

Title: Ode to Orsola Caccia
Created in: 2022
Dimensions: 70x95 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
This flower still life is inspired by the work 'Flowers in a grotesque vase' by Mannerist painter and nun Orsola Maddalena Caccia (1596-1676). The nearly rectangular arrangement has striking individual elements evenly spaced over a monochromatic background. These features were intended for religious meditation. Like many of the earliest known female painters of the Renaissance, Orsola was a nun. She started a painting studio in the monastery of Moncalvo of which she eventually became abbess. She is believed to have painted the first known flower still life in Italy

Title: Sanyu
Created in: 2022
Dimensions: 50x70 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
Work by Sanyu or Chang Yu (Chinese: 常玉; 1901–1966), a Chinese-French painter, inspired me to create this still life. I have tried to capture his unique style - searching between East and West, between traditional and modern, rooted in Art Deco - in this flower still life. I also looked at the work of John Brack, an Australian painter whose work flourished in the 1950s. In his work I particularly liked the use of beautiful brown tones and a composition with three chrysanthemums.

Title: Fin de Siècle
Made in: 2021
Size: 45x45 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
Flower still life made by Jacqueline Louter, in the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art.
'Fin de Siècle' has its roots in the period in art history of the same name. For this work I was guided by the poem by Hans Frans, as well as by the melancholy atmosphere in Couperus's books, my childhood memories of the Archipelbuurt and my grandfather's antiques shop in Noordeinde. The models were two flower still lifes with a convex vase by the Dutch painter Floris Verster. He was a fellow student of Breitner and Israels at the Academy of Art in The Hague. One critic wrote of his work: "this Verster is fond of the sparkle in vases, the flowing colors of red flowers".

Title: Belle Epoque

Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
Flower still life made by Jacqueline Louter, in the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art.
For 'Belle Epoque' I was inspired by Dutch painters from the period of the same name. The ginger jar frequently figures in flower still lifes at that time. My work originated from various paintings with such a ginger jar on them - among others by Arntzenius, Zandleven and Mankes, but in terms of tone mainly based on a still life by Breitner, a contemporary of the writer Couperus. He painted the flower still life in the 'Haagse School' period around 1881-1882. When I actually found such a ginger jar in a thrift store in The Hague, I immediately saw what I had to do!

Flower still life created by Jacqueline Louter, in the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art using artificial flowers, vases and props found in the thrift store.
'Interbellum I' is my reflection and interpretation of the vibrant and turbulent period in art between the First and Second World War. For this work I was guided by the dark, menacing atmosphere of the period and the abstract forms of Art Deco. The discovery of the vase prompted me in this work to this combination of colors and the minimalist arrangement. In 2021 I made a sequel to this work 'Interbellum II'.

Flower still life created by Jacqueline Louter, in the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art using artificial flowers, vases and props found in the thrift store.
'Interbellum II' is my reflection and interpretation of the vibrant period in art between the First and Second World War. It is a lighter sequel, in the same color setting, to my work Interbellum I that I made in 2020. The foundation for this work was laid with the discovery of the vase in the thrift shop. For me, the black vase represents with some fantasy the abstract shapes that arose in the Art Deco period. With the blue flowers I came across some time later, the flaming 'orchid' and the symbolic red rose, I made an arrangement that complements the abstract shape of the vase.

It is inspired by the work of Jan des Bouvrie. His 'white interiors' were groundbreaking in the 1970s. This preference for white is of course reflected in 'ode to Jan'. Title: Rachel Ruysch Tribute
Made in: 2021
Dimension: 40x48
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
'Rachel Ruysch Tribute' is a tribute to the flowery work of Rachel Ruysch from the Dutch Baroque period. Her flower still lifes consist of carefully composed bouquets against a dark background. in her flower arrangements she made fictional compositions. She took both live and prepared flowers as an example. Her father, Frederik Ruysch, knew how to prepare flowers in such a way that they continued to look as if they were in bloom. This enabled Rachel Ruysch to bring together flowers in a composition that bloomed in different seasons. She continued to paint actively until the age of 84 and produced an oeuvre of some 100 flower still lifes.

Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
Flower still life created by Jacqueline Louter, in the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art. Neoclassic started with the discovery of the vase in a thrift shop in Delft. In my view, the vase hints at Greek classical examples. With this basic idea, a winter flower still life in warm chocolate tones quickly formed in the studio. The material consists of second-hand artificial flowers and props.

This flower still life is inspired by the Renaissance. In that period the flower still life was presented for the first time - in the Western art world - as an independent art form. Especially paintings with a picking basket. Before that it always had a religious function, for example in paintings with an image of Mary.

Title: Sluijters Hommage

Size: 65x80 cm
Edition: 7
Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
Flower still life made by Jacqueline Louter, in the Preserved series, consisting of recreations of flower still lifes from different style periods in art. The material consists of found artificial flowers and props from the thrift store.
A combination of 2 paintings by Jan Sluijters served as a model for this flower still life. Both works were made in 1912. One still clearly has the characteristics of Luminism, the other marks the transition to a much brighter use of color that was also seen not much later by fellow artist Mondrian. The vase was the starting point. Exactly such a vase in 'Delft Blue' features in the more expressionist painting.

This still life in winter pastels is based on a jug (in the style of) 'Delft White' found in a Delft thrift store. Besides Delft Blue, there has always been Delft White pottery. Sources of inspiration for the flower still life were the 17th century painter Balthasar van der Ast, who lived in Delft for the last 25 years of his life, and the famous 'whites' of the painter Jacob de Wit, playing puttis, painted pastel white on pastel white.

Print on dibond with a thickness of 4 mm and a matt lacquer finish.
'Trinity' is a flower still life that is part of my project Preserved consisting of flower still lifes made from second-hand materials. Trinity started with the discovery of the small dark green glass ball vase in a thrift store in Delft. Combined with a fabric 'orchid', which has only three flowers due to the ravages of time, I made this still life in fresh green tones with a nod to the Japanese Ikebana style.
