In the context of the exhibition 'Woman in Art' at The Hague Art Circle, inspired by the life motto 'Quand même! ' by famous theater icon Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), I made 'In the Wings'. For the translation into a visual expression, I looked at symbolism and image characteristics of historical art genres and I delved into the fascinating life of Sarah Bernhardt.
I found inspiration in Symbolism, an innovative art movement that emerged during the Belle Epoque, where I specifically focused on the work of Odilon Redon. In 1900-1901, this French painter made a series of innovative representations with flowers and branches that seem to float in a vacuum and embody an abstraction of our inner world.
My work 'In the Wings' refers to theater elements such as the stage, the facade, the decor and the wings on either side of the stage. It symbolizes ambiguity, layering, fragility, and playing with illusion. It includes two apparently identical images. While one image approaches the scene head-on, the other reveals a look behind the scenes.
The front part consists of a wooden frame, covered with a semi-transparent mesh fabric. This fabric has a photographic sublimation print with roses, rose hips and branches. The backdrop consists of a giclée print on a forex plate. The whole is mounted in a wooden frame.
